Researchers are using nanotechnology to develop a medical dressing which will detect and treat infection in wounds. The dressing will work by releasing antibiotics from nanocapsules triggered by the presence of disease-causing pathogenic bacteria, which will target treatment before the infection takes hold.

Jonathan Cox (Dept of Chemistry) is working with scientists from the University of Cambridge and the Natural History Museum to investigate how hammerhead sharks are able to sniff out their prey. They are using the latest technology to study the shark's amazing sense of smell in a completely new way.
Over 650 school children explored the link between science and art at a two-day, hands-on science fair that opened at the University of Bath on Friday 12 March. A robot that can be programmed to have a range of medical conditions, from heart disease to constipation, is being used by Pharmacy students at the University of Bath to help practise diagnostic skills and treating patients. The SimMan 3G, dubbed “Simon” by the students, is a life-sized model that talks, breathes and reacts to medicines in the same way as a real human. Scientists hope to gain a greater understanding of disease and birth defects with a new imaging database that will map the expression of genes that control development. This movie shows the pattern of genes that are switched on and off at different times and places during wing development of a chick embryo. The white areas show bone growth; the activity of genes involved in the formation of digits are shown in other colours.
